What is Therapy? |
|
It seems that in the UK the idea of going “into therapy” causes people to become very defensive, just as if they are expecting to be judged by others as being inadequate, useless and of no value to society.
However I say, “hold your head up high”, because it takes real courage and conviction to enter into therapy and to be able to gain the maximum possible from it. Therapy is a “journey” of self-awareness and personal growth. Therapy is not easy; it asks various things of the client:
¨ For them to allow themselves to trust another person that they know very little of, and to follow their guidance, even though in their current world the things that they are guided towards will seem alien to them.
¨ To hold a degree of positivity and possess the courage to maintain self-responsibility for progress throughout the “journey”. If you expect the therapist to try and “rescue” you the therapist will merely end up enabling you to continue with your limiting, thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
¨ To have some knowledge of their self-worth that allows them to take a risk with their time and money. No therapist can assure an outcome. You may receive complete relief, partial relief or none at all. However self-worth allows us to invest in ourselves and to give ourselves the best possible chance to move forward.
Although we should never wait for perfect conditions, as they never occur! There is an appropriate time and place for us to enter into therapy, and sometimes just because we feel vulnerable, we might not yet be in that place.
Most people entering therapy do so as a consequence of being highly aware of a “symptom”, that is now affecting the quality of their life. The symptom can often be thought of as a coping or defence mechanism that the subconscious mind has misguidedly chosen, believing that in some way it will be of value in allowing the client to be safer in their world. Understandably the client wants this symptom to go away. However the route to achieving such is very often indirect. Therapy focuses on discovering the underlying causes and helping the client to adapt/change in such away that the symptom is no longer required, or choose less harmful mechanisms to allow them to cope. It has often been said that therapy is about offering the client options/choices that they are currently unaware of having, which may subsequently involve changing beliefs about oneself and the world.
There is no quick fix, irrespective of the methods involved, and this includes hypnosis, although it can be an immensely useful tool that often accelerates change. If your problem has its roots in emotionally disturbing events from the past, that’s where the understanding and moving on must come from.
As a therapist I can best be thought of as a confidant, mentor, guide and critical friend, who does not judge. I respect the courage that it takes to take self-responsibility and to come forward to be assisted. I have also sat in that chair, and played the role of client. During our engagement we will likely use a mix of tools which may include; hypnosis, NLP, CBT, EFT, teaching, coaching, psychotherapy etc. Do not expect rigidity as you are a dignified human being and need to be subjectively treated as such. You can however expect to be asked to play your role within our team and to do any homework that you are given.
I look forward to your call and our first meeting at which we can ascertain the appropriateness of working together as a means of assisting you with moving forward in your life.
NOW IS THE RIGHT TIME TO RESPECT YOURSELF AND ALLOW ANOTHER TO HELP
